Two of the Photonics Academy’s Nuffield Science Bursary students from 2007 were selected to demonstrate their Gold BA Crest (CREativity in Science and Technology) award projects at this year’s prestigious Young Scientists and Engineers fair in London.
Teleri Edwards and Nivedtha Muthukumar, both from Howell's School in Denbigh, presented their ideas to judges in the hope of winning one of several impressive prizes. The prizes included travelling as the UK entrant to prestigious science competitions across the world, one of which was won by Teleri Edwards. She along with two other winners will represent the UK at The European Union Contest for Young Scientists which will be held in Copenhagen in September 2008.
Teleri Edwards’ project was a 5 beam laser combination lock, which works in the same way as a standard mechanical lock, but with lasers instead of clicks. It is thought that is may be the most secure lock ever invented
Nivedtha Muthukumar created a fibre optic breathing sensing instrument which responds to an increase or decrease in a persons breathing rate. This instrument has applications in situations such as during MRI scans, or even in the detection and prevention of cot death.
The Young Scientists and Engineers Fair 2008 took place at the Centre of the Cell, Whitechapel, London on 7 March 2008 and was the first time that this prestigious event had been held on the opening day of National Science and Engineering Week. There were several stands from other science and engineering organisations, including Young Engineers, with hands on activities and displays to help promote the sciences and help support schools in enriching the science curriculum. This event, along with thousands of others, formed an integral part of the wider national celebration and promotion of science and engineering happened across the UK during the Week.
